Food Storage for Hurricane & Tsunami. Honolulu, Oahu, HawaiiWhy do I need Food Storage?

C’mon, the world is not going to end tomorrow!  Why should I waste my time and money on food storage?

Okay, I admit it! I don’t expect TEOTWAWKI  (The End of the World as we Know it) to happen tomorrow, nor on 12/21/2012 (the date that the Mayan calendar ends) either.  But it doesn’t take such a dramatic event to make someone want to have at least a modest level of food storage.  Do you live in an area or region that earthquakes are possible?  What about tornadoes?  Blizzards?  Hurricanes?  Tsunami?  There aren’t many parts of the world that aren’t subject to occasional severe weather.  I live in Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii, and although we haven’t had a hurricane or significant Tsunami in decades, it doesn’t mean one can’t “rear it’s ugly head”.  Every expert ALWAYS says that it’s NOT IF, BUT WHEN.

Let’s put the possibility of a widespread natural disaster aside, why else should I put aside a few extra cans of food?  What would happen if the main bread-winner of your family got sick or lost their job?  Would extra food in the pantry be useful?  What if you are a one-car family, and the car gets totaled, or even has a major break-down, and getting to the store becomes more difficult?  Those extra food-stores would become more important.

Have you ever been cooking and ran out of a critical ingredient?  Have you ever found yourself making a late-night run to the convenience store?  Possibly in inclement weather?  Ever pay more for convenience store pricing?  Wouldn’t it have been great to have an extra stash at home?

What if you could buy everything at sale prices?  That would save big money!  Whenever you find a terrific sale, buy a few more cans.  Stock up.  If you don’t then when you go back later for the same item, you will pay regular prices.  Take advantage of sales and “kill two birds with the same stone”.  Save money, and build up your food storage.

The easiest way to start is to buy a little extra on each visit to the store.  If you need 2 cans of Vienna Sausage, buy 4.  It’s not hard, and not very expensive to start small.  Know the things that your family likes.  Make a goal to have 3 days of extra food.  When you hit that goal, increase to a week, then to a month, then to three.  You’ll be surprised, a three month supply of food will get your family through most disasters.  Start small, and work towards your goals.

It’s your job to ensure the safety and comfort of your family.  Start your food storage today.
