Heard of the Rule of 72?

False Alarms from Home Security Alarm Systems

False Alarms from Home Security Alarm SystemsRepeated malfunctions within 72 hours.

My alarm tripped several times within 3 days, is there a way to count it as a single occurrence?

According to the Honolulu Police Department’s website,
“If you have a problem with your alarm which causes it to malfunction repeatedly within a seventy-two hour period you may ask that these be put together as one occurrence if you can show:
The problem was corrected and
You do not have any other false alarms within 30 days for the same problem.
This is called the common cause provision.”

If you have several false alarms that occur within a 72 hour period and you suspect that it was due to a malfunction of the alarm system, then call your alarm company and request a service call.  If the problem is due to the alarm system, is corrected, and doesn’t occur again for 30 days, then you can request to evoke the common cause provision, sometimes called the rule of 72.  This little used loophole protects the homeowner from a short spurt of false alarms due to a bad sensor on their home security alarm system.  Be sure to get a receipt for the service call from the alarm company, and that it clearly states 1) the cause of the false alarms, and 2) the corrective actions taken.  It is your responsibility to notify HPD of the situation, and that corrective actions have been done.  Submit your request in writing with the receipt of repair.  If your alarm system is past warranty and you do not have a repair service contract, be prepared to pay the alarm company for the service call, but it will surely be cheaper than paying for multiple false alarms.  If your alarm company can’t explain the common cause provision, then either call HPD at 532-8444.  You may also want to find an alarm company that understands the laws pertaining to your alarm system.
