How often do you need to replace your alarm system’s standby battery?

Do you know that your home security alarm system has a standby battery?  When was the last time you changed the control panel’s backup battery?  How long do they normally last? The main Standby Battery is a critical component of your home security alarm system.

1)  Backup Power.
The alarm backup battery provides standby power that will keep the alarm system functioning during a power outage.  Most systems are designed where the backup battery keeps everything going; control panel, keypad, siren, doors, motions, and communication.  Although the specifics may vary depending on the type, size, and age of the system and battery, it is common to get between 8 and 24 hours of standby time for an average system.

The standby battery also filters the incoming power, and will often provide the system with “clean” power.  This helps to protect your system from surges, crackle, and “popcorn” electrical noises and disturbances.

How often do I have to change the battery?
From my experience, the average alarm user’s battery will need to be replaced every 3-5 years.  Most modern systems monitor the battery, and will notify you when it is time to change the battery.  Most alarm systems are 12vdc, and recommend a 12vdc, 5aHr Sealed Lead-Acid Battery.  Although these batteries are common to most alarm systems, be careful to make sure you get the right battery for your system.  Some systems require 6vdc batteries, or less frequently, other less-common battery types.

If you are not sure about your alarm system’s battery, call your alarm company.  They should be able to tell you the exact type of battery, if it is time to replace it, and be able to set up a service call to have the battery replaced.
